Unsubscribe a Vehicle

When you sell or transfer your car to another person or third party, you need to unsubscribe the car. For this you require a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. This document is to notify the DMV that you sold or transferred your car. It is only necessary when your vehicle will have a new owner. Legal owner transfers do not require an NRL (Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability).

This is necessary so that you are protected, so that when properly completed and the information is registered by the DMV, if the new driver of the car has an accident or a fine, it goes to their driver’s record and not yours.

You must unsubscribe the car within five days after the vehicle was sold or transferred.

The NRL does not remove its name from the vehicle’s history. This happens until the new owner makes a title transfer, using the title you give him. Once the information required in the NRL is received by DMV and updated in the record, you will be completely free of all responsibility for the vehicle or any civil or criminal action arising from the vehicle after the date of sale.

For example: you will no longer be involved in any way for traffic violations resulting from the operation of the vehicle from the date of sale or civil tender resulting from the use of the vehicle or penalty fees for registration renewals. Nor will you be affected if the person who bought your car does not have auto insurance.

NOTE:

In case of a lawsuit or complaint, the court is responsible for determining if you have complied with the law and are exempt from criminal or civil liability.
